Description

mosp-road-logo.pngThe goal of Motorsport is to become the most realistic simulator of wheeled vehicles.

THE OPEN SOURCE DRIVING SIMULATOR! For simracers, by simracers.

News

After some long vacations, the Bullet physics engine has finally been integrated into Motorsport.

Furthermore, the multithread system has received some bugfixes and features that allows to provide a deterministic and framerate independent physics simulation.

The linkage between physics and the rest of engines is not coded yet, but is the next big feature to develop. Some screenshots or even videos should come soon after that is done.

Greetings fellow simracers!
You may have noticed the lack of news during last month. Well, there actually weren't any news at all since, for one reason or another, I didn't devote any time to Motorsport.

But this week i got my hands on the keyboard again, and started coding the graphics system. We're still using OGRE, as in previous Motorsport Evolutions. This time, however, the permanent storage format has changed, for good: Motorsport can now directly load Collada files!

In case you didn't know, Collada is a standard file format for game/multimedia data. Originally created by Sony Computer Entertainment, it is now managed by the Khronos Group consortium.
Collada is supported by many applications, such as 3d modelling packages (3D Studio Max, Blender, Maya, etc), physics modelling packages (Scythe Physics Editor, Blender...), game engines (Unreal Engine, and now Motorsport ;-), and others (Google Earth, SketchUp, etc).

Enough talking. Click below to access the (currently small) Evolution 3 screenshots gallery:

Here's the monthly status update again. Just like last time, there's not any eye-kandy or juicy video to show. However, there have been some good progress on the coding side. There have been two main things i've spent my time on:

First, the build system has been refactored even more. Amongst the improvements are:
  • Shared sconstruct scripts between different projects.
  • Separated libraries, final programs and unit testing programs.
  • Improved compilation phase, cleaning unneeded warnings from the output.
Second, I've been doing some tests with multithreading. As you may already know, Intel and AMD have already bet on multithreading as the solution for the lack of increases in computation speeds. Therefore, like it or not, that's what us (developers) will have to deal with in order to get the most out of future domestic hardware.

So I've coded those tests in order to try to multithread Motorsport as much as possible and necessary. The results have been pretty convincing, so I'm now working on porting the ideas to Motorsport.

Once the multithreading is implemented in trunk, i can start assembling the libraries that allow for some eye-candy (that is, graphics engine, sound library...) :-).

Let's hope I can write about it (and of course post some screenies!) pretty soon...

Seeing as there's been a few weeks without any big news to announce, I'll simply announce the small ones :-).

Not much has happened from the drivers' or artists' point of view. This means that nothing new is downloadable for you to test - sorry for that :-)

However, in the developers' front there have been some interesting advances. After some weeks of research and design, the general development flow has been decided. The main ideas behind it are model-driven engineering and test driven development. Thanks to that, the actual development of Evolution 3 has finally started.

There's already some working source code that you may want to try if you're into coding. Instructions for Windows and GNU/Linux builds are included. Contact us if you have any problems.

More news should come soon, as development of Evolution 3 progresses. Due to the unpaid nature of the project, no time estimates can be given, so stay tuned! (or you can subscribe to the RSS feed).

Website downtime

Jan 24, 2008 by stenyak
Motorsport website has suffered an unscheduled downtime of a week due to technical issues, being enabled only for registered users.

Unfortunately, I hadn't had time to fix it until today. But it should all be working correctly already. Please notify of any problems by opening a New bug at the Tasks section.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
